Players set a high standard

THERE was a good attendance of members to watch keenly contested matches with the bowling and scoring of a very high standard throughout an action packed evening.

In the first match of the night Josephine Moran and Megan Devin took on Tony Lacken and Tom Devin.

Josephine and Megan started the game brightly quickly taking control in the first two ends going three up. Tony and Tom had a relatively slow start and were struggling to fine their rhythm on the mat until the fourth end closing the gap down to one, the latter took a firm grip on the contest in the fifth end to go two up.

However Megan and Josephine had other ideas producing two superb shots to the head creating more problems for their opponents squaring the match. Tony and Tom gradually regained control of the match in the last end showing their superb drawing ability proved crucial seeing of their opponents by three shots in which turned out to be a classic game of bowls.

In the second match Alice Leonard and Marie Maher were pitted against Eugene Mc Kenna and Peter Woods, Marie and Alice made a slick start setting themselves up well in the first three ends taking the lead four up. The latter had further chances to extend their lead but were unable to take their opportunit­ies in the fourth end letting in Eugene and Peter to trim the score down to two the latter continued to display their fine bowling in the next end edging in front one up. However it looked as though the pressure was weighing heavily on Alice and Marie as they sprung out of the blocks in the next end to take the lead two up with one end remaining. Eugene and Peter were caught on the hop but showed a bit of steel snatching the last end relying on their vast experience making a great recovery in a very tough match by three shots.

In the third match Aileen Fitzgerald and Sadie Campbell clashed with Ciara Floyd and Jackie Maher.

Aileen and Sadie opened the proceeding making a positive start to the game taking the lead two up after two ends with some lovely bowling. Ciara and Jackie didn’t panic but stayed positive and showed a bit of back bone wiping the slate clean all square in the fourth end. The latter continued their rich vein of form producing the goods in the next end two up. However despite Aileen and Sadie’s best efforts it was one way traffic in the last end with Ciara and Jackie showing their creative skills taking the win in impressive style and into the hat for the next round.

In the last game of the night between four experience­d stalwarts in Claire Woods and Jimmy Flood came up against Jack Howell and John Hurley it was the latter who started the game at a very quick pace having the upper hand in the first three ends getting their nose in front three up.

Claire and Jimmy appeared to be a bit nervous in the first few ends but settled into the game in the fourth end cutting the deficit down to one. Jack and John didn’t throw in the towel fighting back in the next end playing some excellent bowls forehand draw shots to the jack edging in front two up. However Claire and Jimmy were far from finished they responded well in the last two ends with their opponents unable to match their drawing skills and produced a gallant display of bowling taking the spoils in fine style by two shots.

Congratula­tions to Jimmy Flood Greenhills and Margaret Kelly Geraldine’s on coming runner up in the A open doubles in the Redeemer, Dundalk recently.

Times of play Juveniles 7 to 8 pm seniors 8 to 10.30am.

Note to all members the summer league doubles draw will take place at 8.30pm if you are unable to attend please contact any committee member for the smooth running of the competitio­n.
