CLOVERHILL

THE July singles stableford saw eighteen year old Jamie Duffy (5) produce a round of 1 under par 42 points, the highlight being an eagle at the Par 5 sixth. Jamie was a winner by 2 points from Shane Toale (14) who beat Stephen Cunningham (20) on the countback as they both returned 40 points. Next weekend is a v Par competition

There is nothing better than a bit of sibling rivalry in sport, if for nothing more than causing a bit of a pleasant rivalry and banter. When younger brother Colum hit the headlines a few weeks ago by winning a competition older brother Raymond took some flack. But in true sporting fashion Raymond Quinn (18) exacted revenge as his 45 points gave him victory in the BC ELECTRICS, Dundalk sponsored Friday Open. Raymond finished a point ahead of David Duffy (20) with another David, Hamill (10) taking the third placed prizemoney with 40 points. Kevin Commins, Ardee with 34 points was the leading away score. BC ELECTRICS, Dundalk sponsored Friday Open Entry Fee- Members £7/€8 Visitors £12/€14 (which includes entry to the 2’s). You can book on-line or through the clubhouse.

The third round off the Wednesday Cup off the Front 9 Green markers produced a close contest with the Premier counties John Kelly in tipp top form with a winning return of 24 points. John pipped Paul Kelly by a point with Mark Shevlin, Raymond Kelly and Pearse Murphy back on 22 points each. Next week it is round 3 of the 5 to be played off the Back 9 White markers.

Raymond Kelly was the winner of Thursday’s senior competition by a point from Joe Hazzard who in turn was a point clear of Fr Cullen.

Joe made an error in counting the cards which saw Tom Holland proclaimed the winner but unfortunately Tom was one of three others denied third spot on the countback.

The draw for the Seniors Singles and Pairs matchplay have been made with the first round to be completed on or before July 20.

Seniors play continues on Thursday’s at 10 am.

The big inter-club match coming up is our Pierce Purcell quarter final with Castlereagh Hill at Banbridge at 1pm on Sunday July 16.

DUNDALK

CONGRATULATIONS to Caolan Rafferty who was one of the stars as Leinster claimed their third Interprovincial title in a row this week at Carlow Golf Club.

Rafferty, who was part of last year’s successful team, had an impressive haul of 5.5pts from his six foursomes and singles matches over the three days.

In the opening match against Munster, Rafferty and foursomes partner Eugene Smith from Ardee defeated John Murphy and James Sugure 4and4 before Rafferty was sent out at No.1 in the singles and defeated newly crowned Irish Amateur Open champion Peter O’Keefe 2and1. Those wins helped Leinster to a 6.5 to 4.5 victory.

Leinster had a much more emphatic victory on Day Two when they beat Connacht by 8.5 to 2.5. In the morning foursomes Rafferty and Smith halved with Devin Morley and Jack McDonnell while the afternoon Rafferty beat Barry Anderson 5and3 in the top match.

That left Leinster needing just a draw from their final match against Ulster to retain their title and they got off to the best possible start by winning the foursomes 3-1 with Rafferty and Smith winning 2and1 against Jordan Hood and Kyle McCarron.

Team Captain, Seamus McParland from Greenore, again put his faith in Rafferty to lead Leinster our in the singles and for the third day in a row he delivered from the No.1 slot with a one hole win over Irish international Tiarnan McLarnon.

Leinster eventually won 7-4 to complete a 100 per cent record over the week and win three interprovincial titles on the trot for the first time in over 50 years and sights are now set on emulating that team from the 1960s which won four-in-a-row from 1962 to 1965.

The Oriel Cup is the big midweek competition during the July Open and this year’s event signalled a much welcome return to the winner’s enclosure for Chris Murden.

The 10 handicapper saw his patience over the last few months

finally rewarded last Wednesday when he produced a five under par net round of 67 to win by two shots from Tom Lanigan (21) as only three players in the 141 strong field managed to break 70 nett .

Murden’s victory was built on a strong start over the first five holes which he covered in two under gross thanks to birdies at the second and fifth. A bogey six and a triple bogey eight at the back to back par fives threatened to wreck his round but he steadied the ship beautifully and over the final 11 holes he rolled in nine pars and also had bogeys at 11th and 16th where he had shots.

Garret Duffy (5), who won the Junior Cup earlier this year, shot a fine 73 to take the gross prize while Robert O’Hanlon (8), Shane Thornton (14) and Tom Lanigan took the category prizes and James Reilly (23) won the juvenile prize.

Open Week finished on Sunday with a Singles Stableford competition that was won by Ultan Gaughran (8). He shot 41pts which was one better than the three category winners – Rian McDonnell (7), Conor Hackett (12) and Patsy Cole (18) who all returned 40pts.

Gaughran had a very steady round which consisted of 11 pars, five bogeys and two birdies. The birdies came at the par five 10th and par four 14th as he went out in 20pts and came home in 21pts.

Eddie Rogers (2) took a second gross prize in two weeks with a score of 34pts while Conor Murphy (18) was an impressive winner of the juvenile prize with a fine score of 45pts.

Open Week teed off last Monday with Darren Myles (7) taking the SIngles Stableford competition after a score of 43pts and he also won the gross prize with 36pts. Friday’s Four Man Team competition resulted in a win for Brendan Tinnelly (19), Declan Conlon (19), Liam O’Mahony (18) and Steve Buckingham (17) while Saturday’s Fourball Stasbleford competition saw Paul O’Callaghan (10) and Brian Mernagh (12) take the honours with 47pts. The club would like to thank all those businesses who so generously sponsored the July Open Week.

The Club Championship takes place this Saturday and given the standard amongst the club’s elite golfers it promises to be an exciting 36 hole event. One of the threeballs worth watching is the group featuring defending champion Caolan Rafferty whose exploits this season saw him promoted to the GUI’s international squad

last week. He is grouped with teenager Eoghan Murphy, who is now playing off scratch, and Richie Newell who is edging closer to the zero mark. Rafferty, now playing off plus four, will start of favourite but he faces stiff competition from the likes of Aaron Grant, Murphy, Newell and Irish Boys international Josh Mackin.

Our Juvenile Golf Summer Camps which are hosted by our club professional and Leinster GUI coach Leslie Walker commenced this week. They are open to members and non-members and the cost is €50 per camp which including drink, healthy bar, fruit and gift pack.
