Jim was the anchor who brought the family together

-

JAMES, better known as Jim, Harty passed away rather suddenly in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital on February 23rd, 2017.

Jim was born to the late James and Jane Harty on March 17th, 1946 and educated in the old Ballymakenny School at Crosstown.

Jim went on to do gardening in the Edwardian Garden at Listoke.

Having spent many happy years there when it was in the ownership of Betty and Nick Nicholson with the Head Gardener Mr John McManus. He later went on to serve his time as a weaver in Robert Ushers where he made many friends.

When he retired it gave him time to spend in his own garden which he enjoyed very much. Jim loved all sports, especially athletics and could quote times to the nearest second for many athletes way back over the years.

He spent many happy days watching athletics in the Lourdes and Santry Stadium in the early sixties. He also loved GAA and enjoyed playing for many years with the O’Raghallaighs.

Jim also had a great interest in history and politics and had a wonderful memory. He had a great sense of humour and enjoyed socialising with family, friends and neighbours telling tall tales and maybe a song. He was also well known for his hospitality and all were welcome for tea in Ballymakenny.

Jim was the Harty family anchor who brought the family together. Another of Jim’s many loves was travelling abroad and enjoyed many trips with family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Having reposed at his sister Bernadette and Francis Hurley’s home at Ballymakenny where many called to pay their respects.

His remains were removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Church for funeral mass celebrated by Monsignor Jim Carroll who gave an appropriate portrayal of Jim’s life and lifestyle with the beautiful rendering of hymns from Eimear Carroll King.

He was laid to rest in the family plot in Ballymakenny cemetery.
