CCTV cameras in estates are not working

-

MANY of the CCTV cameras in estates around the town are ‘inoperable’ as they use old technology and ‘were put in the wrong places’.

Now Louth CC are looking at how they can be ‘recommissioned’ and brought into the system operated in the town centre by An Garda Siochana.

Cllr Paul Bell said people were dumping in areas where the cameras are, but must be aware that they are ineffective.

‘ They are dumping in Ballsgrove green in front of the cameras as they know they won’t be apprehended,’ he told last week’s policing meeting.

It was revealed that the Dept of Justice was giving out grants at the moment in respect of cameras, paying 60% of the costs, up to €40,000 to groups who wanted to introduce it.

The BIDS group and the gardai in Dundalk were coming together for a project it was revealed.

It was stated the likes of the Drogheda Chamber could become part of such a project in Drogheda.

Supt Andrew Watters said the gardai were keen to look at the cameras in certain areas and wanted to see them upgraded.
