CCTV CAMERAS FOR PORT ARE POSSIBLE

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

THE possibility of installing CCTV cameras at Port beach to try and deter robberies from vehicles in the area was raised at the Ardee area Joint Policing Meeting last week.

Cathaoirleach of Louth CC, Colm Markey, said that it was bad for the district when people arrived back at their car from a walk on the county’s Blue Flag beach to find their car burgled.

‘It is a great amenity, but this needs a focus as it’s been going on for years,’ he stated.

Supt Andrew Watters confirmed that there were suspects in relation to incidents at Port being investigated at the moment.

Details of a new community CCTV project were revealed by John Lawrence of Louth CC, stating that government grants of up to 60%, or €40,000, could be secured for projects in the county.

However, they would need to be driven by community groups , working in tandem with the Joint Policing Committee.

It was stated that Port could be an ideal project for such a CCTV initiative, if local support can be secured for it.

Local councillors can be contacted if members of the community wish to be part of the project.
