Soccer star banned after drink driving stop in Mell

A FORMER Drogheda United League of Ireland footballer has been banned from driving for two years after he pleaded guilty to driving while he was two and a half times over the legal drink driving limit.

Killian Brennan (33), who now plays in midfield for St Patrick’s Athletic was also convicted and fined €75 for the offence when he appeared before Judge John Coughlan at Drogheda District Court.

Defence barrister Irene Sands informed Judge Coughlan the case was due to be contested but the defendant is entering a guilty plea.

The court heard the defendant was stopped at a checkpoint at Mell in Drogheda. He was brought to Drogheda Garda Station where he gave a breath sample of 58mg/100ml. The legal drink driving limit is 22mg/100ml breath.

Brennan, of Marley’s Court in Drogheda pleaded guilty to drink driving contrary to Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act at Mell in Drogheda on April 15.

Inspector Brendan Cadden told the court the defendant has no previous conviction­s.

Handing down the driving ban, conviction and fine, Judge Coughlan granted Ms Sands legal aid.

Judge Coughlan fixed recognisan­ces in the event of an appeal.
