Barman victim of assault

-

A MAN who assaulted a bar man while he was closing a public house claimed he has ‘no memory’ of the incident.

Gareth Charles (44) said he was attending a friend’s memorial Mass and got drunk afterwards.

He was out on the street outside Garvey’s Pub on Scarlett Street around midnight when the barman of the pub asked him to move off the street.

The defendant then assaulted the barman.

Charles, of Callystown, Clogherhead pleaded guilty to Section 2 assault, being intoxicated and using threatening and abusive behaviour on September 4th, 2016.

Defence barrister Irene Sands said the incident was ‘alcohol inspired’.

‘His friend, a fisherman was lost at sea,’ said Ms Sands.

‘It was due to be a contested case but he is entering a guilty plea,’ she said.

Judge John Coughlan said he appreciated the way the defendant dealt with the case and after the defendant handed in €500 as a charitable donation, Judge Coughlan struck the case out.
