Memories of Sr Mary and Sister Bernadette

-

I RAN this little story recently from 1967.

‘HOME in Drogheda for the first time in five years is Sr. Mary Infant Jesus of the Order of the Holy Ghost and Mary Immaculate, who has been teaching in the southern states of America for a number of years.

‘ The main purpose of Sr. Mary’s visit this time is to see her eighty-three years-old mother, Mrs. Annie McEntegart, who is living with her daughter, Mrs.Mary Delany at 11 Park View.

‘While here, she is also visiting her other sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Curran of Thomas Street and Sister Bernadette of the Siena Convent and also her brothers, Mr. Johnny McEntegart (Bothar Brugha) and Mr. Charlie Mc-Entegart (Nun’s Walk). Another brother, Paddy, is living in Manchester at present.’

Sometimes pieces like that pass by, but sometimes the follow up is superb to see.

So my thanks to Fr Paul Clayton-Lea for filling me in a bit more on the piece.

He has great images of those days and pictured left, is his cousin, Sr Mary, with her brother Paddy McEntaggart.

The second image is Charlie McEntagart (who had a butcher’s shop in the Chord Road), Sr.Bernadette OP on one of her rare outings from the Chord Road convent and Fr Paul’s mother, May Clayton-Lea.

The photos were taken in Termonfeckin in the late 1980’s.

Unique images of a family history and great to have.
