Drogheda Independent

Boyne Music event at Townley Hall

FESTIVAL WILL RUN FROM AUGUST 4-6TH AT THE SLANE ROAD VENUE

-

The Boyne Music Festival is celebrating its fifth anniversary August 4th to 6th at Townley Hall in Drogheda. The weekend programme will bring together internationally acclaimed artists in a wide range of events, including concerts, tours, workshops, talks and more.

Over the last five years, the Festival has developed a sterling reputation for world-class chamber music. This year, two evening concert programmes, on Friday and Sunday, will offer guests the opportunity to hear masterworks by Brahms, Schubert, Mahler, Ravel, Fauré and Rossini, among others, in a setting that is both intimate and inspiring.

On Saturday, August 5th, the Festival will present an evening programme combining greats of the classical and jazz worlds. Jazz-inspired chamber works will be followed by a performance by three of the leading jazz musicians in the UK: vocalist Norma Winstone, guitarist John Parricelli and bassist Chris Laurence.

In a special afternoon event on Sunday, August 6th, famed mathematician Marcus du Sautoy will give a talk on symmetry in Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The talk will be interspersed with excerpts of the piece played by pianist Sholto Kynoch, and will be followed by a performance of the Dmitri Sitkovetsky string trio arrangement of the work by violinist Rita Manning, violist Paul Cassidy and cellist Jacqueline Thomas.

Children and young people will once again be a significant part of the Boyne Music Festival. On Saturday morning, August 5th, children can join poet Kate Wakeling and Festival artists for a playful session of interactive poetry and music-making exploring ideas related to the sky at night. The Festival will then put on a light-hearted family concert entitled The Night Sky, featuring a wide range of cosmic repertoire suitable for both the young and the not-so-young alike.

On Sunday afternoon, August 6th, the Festival will present a programme featuring this year’s BMF Young Artists, up-andcoming performers selected through a competitive selection process who receive coaching from Festival artists.

Rounding out the weekend programme will be guided tours of historic Townley Hall and the Battle of the Boyne site, as well as an ongoing fine art print exhibition curated by Stoney Road Press.

The Boyne Music Festival was established in 2012 by sisters Aisling and Julie-Anne Manning of Ravensdale and their cousin Deirdre Brenner of the United States. The Festival is generously underwritten by the Arts Council, Create Louth, local business and individual sponsors.
