Town’s legends to clash at Marian Park

-

SOME of Drogheda Town FC’s top players and managers from the past will come together to play in a special Legends game in Marian Park next Sunday (3pm).

The match marks 16 years since Mick Toner formed the current club from the amalgamation of Drogheda Celtic and West End United, and it is being organised by Dean Smith who still plays for the first team in the Leinster Senior League.

It’s been something of a labour of love for Dean over the past few months as he has made contact with a host of names from the recent past to seek their support.

‘We’re 16 years in existence, we have a great manager in place in Robbie Horgan and a good team, and I’m just trying to build a bit profile for the club,’ said Dean, explaining the background to the match.

‘I’ve been at it since February/March, getting in touch with guys through Twitter and Facebook, but Paul Whelan and some of the older guys were hard to track down because they’re not on social media!’

Whelan, who led the club to three successive promotions, and Alan Kelly will manage the two teams, with a trophy to be presented to the winners, and it’s hoped that a Legends game will take place every three to four years.

Among those confirmed as taking part are Brian Honan, Derek Thornton, Pete Brennan, Ged Leonard and Darius Kierans, while former Drogheda Town players Gavin and Sean Brennan - now of Drogheda United of course - will be there to show their support.

There will be no admission charge, but a collection will be taken at the gate, with all proceeds going to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
