When the doorway of a shopping centre becomes your bed...

Bosnian couple must find comfort on streets

-

IT WAS shortly after 8.30am on a Sunday morning and thankfully, there was no bitter chill of a winter’s breeze in the air.

Two people were rising from their slumber, but this was no fairytale.

They had spent the night, tucked up with blankets, at the front door of the Laurence Shopping Centre on Peter Street.

They looked as if they had both seen a lot of life.

The man spoke no English, the woman just a little.

The pair are from Bosnia, their income coming from an accordian which lay next to them.

But on this morning in Drogheda, they were not the only ones sleeping out.

The door leading into the Boyne Tower just over St Mary’s Bridge has become a home of sorts to another man, who has been here for months.

Around the corner, there nestled a pile of clothes and a bag, somebody’s worldly belongings (pictured).

Another homeless man has also been assisted in recent weeks, a community coming together to arrange food and accommodation, even for just a few nights.

Like life, some people choose their paths, others are forced down theirs.

Each year, Louth CC do a ‘rough sleepers count’ when a representative goes onto the steet to check if there are homeless people openly sleeping rough.

They rarely find anyone - but if they simply look around Drogheda at the moment, they’ll find them.
