Matthew Downey was a land warrior

IS there anything more out there on Matthew Downey from Glassallen, Collon.

He was one of the Plan of Campaign tenants who were evicted from the Masserene Estate in the early 1880s but he was later reinstated in his holding and was a successful farmer.

The evictions at the time were fiercely opposed by the tenants themselves and by leaders in the Land League struggle, notably Mr. John Dillon, who suffered a term of imprisonme­nt as a result of his activities on the occasion.

Matthew Downey was also for many years a wellknown member of the Drogheda Board of Guardians and the Drogheda (Louth) R.D. Council.

He died in the 1920s. which was being formed would be purely cultural,’ she added.
