Jane Sheridan retires after 48 years at St Vincent’s school on Fair Street

-

AT St. Vincent’s, Fair Street, in August next, a familiar figure will be absent from the teaching staff. For the past 48 years, Miss Jane Sheridan has been a much loved, and respected teacher there but this summer she severed her connections with the school and commenced on well earned retirement.

In her own way, Miss Sheridan has been somewhat of a legend in St. Vincents. Brighteyed, eager kiddies, having moved up into “Miss Sheridan’s class” have come home, to tell their parents all about this new teacher, only to be met with the information that “She taught your daddy too.”

Indeed there have been many Drogheda fathers who have had a twinge of nostalgia for the past, when the eventful day arrived that their own youngsters were big enough to pass “upstairs “to receive the excellent tuition which this very talented teacher dispensed.

But Miss Jane Sheridan is only one member of a family, long associated with the teaching profession.

Two of her sisters, and three of her brothers embraced the teaching profession. One of her brothers. Mr. Eddie Sheridan retired only recently from the staff of the local C.B.S. Brothers Frank and Nicky, who are now deceased, were both members of the Christian Brothers Community, the former teaching on the Rock of Gibralter and the latter in Newfoundland.

Sisters. Cissy and Josie, both now deceased, were schoolteachers before joining the Order of the Sisters Of Charity.

The remaining two members of the family are Miss Clare Sheridan, and Miss Lizzie Sheridan, and, with such a great record for teaching in the Sheridan household, one almost wonders how these escaped being bitten by the teaching bug !
