McCarthy family celebrate 57th anniversary

FAMILY GATHERING AT THEIR HOME IN BALLSGROVE

- Fiona MAGENNIS

LOCAL couple Fintan and Marion McCarthy recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary recently and decided to host a family get together to mark the occasion.

The couple have five chilren - Mary, Geraldine, Lorraine, Edward and Christine as well as sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

They decided to gather as many of the clan as they could for a party at their home in Ballsgrove and some family pictures while they were all in one place.

‘Most of them were here but some of them couldn’t make it,’ Fintan told the Drogheda Independent. ‘We thought we’d have a get together and a photo shoot because some of the kids are leaving school, getting jobs and moving away so we thought it was appropriate to get them all together and get a picture.

‘We put a marquee up here in the back garden in Ballsgrove and we got the caterers in and invited myself and Marion’s family to come along. It was a really lovely day and although it did rain for a time it really didn’t spoil it,’ said Fintan.

‘We had a good time and one of my grandsons, Keith is into music so we had a bit of a sing song.’

He revealed that another grandson, Colin, who is also into music, couldn’t be there on the day because he is on tour working with The Script.

He said the sixteen grandchildren are spread all over the country with some in Balbriggan, Monaghan and even Kildare so the day proved to be an ideal opportunity to gather everyone together.

Fintan and Marion met in the Abbey Cinema during the 1950s and married in the Lourdes Church in 1960.

‘Marion says we’re 57 years married and three years probation,’ joked Fintan.

‘We were living down in Boyle O’Reilly and then we got the house in Ballsgrove so we’ve been living up here for about 53 years.’

Fintan worked with Eircom for 50 years while Marion worked in Marco’s Factory as a dressmaker. the factory was situated on the site where the new courthouse currently stands.

The couple’s bridesmaid, Ann Nash who is Marion’s cousin, was there on the day of the party but Fintan’s best man, his borther Aidan McCarthy, couldn’t make it as he lives in London.
