CLOVERHILL

ONCE again there was a terrific turnout of members for one of our most popular annual events the Big Breakfast Scramble. The new stableford format introduced this year went down a treat with some 15 teams bunched within 4 points of the winning team.

It was also great to see new faces cropping up in the winners enclosure as well as on the list for Longest Drives and nearest the pin at all 6 of the Par 3’s.

Thanks to Ann Marie and Bridgie for providing the breakfasts before play and to club Captain Seamus for all his efforts in helping make the event such a success. Also a big thank you to the sponsors and not least the members who took part.

The quartet of Longest Drive winners were Kieran Crummy, Jamie Duffy, David Hamill and Colin Pilkington. Nearest the Pin Hole 4 - Raymond McCumiskey, Hole 7 James Carragher, Hole 9- Gerry McShane, Hole 12- Seamus McGivern, Hole 14 - Tom McCoy, Hole 16-John McCourt. Fourth - Barry McKeown, Conor Tierney, Miceal Byrnes, Charlie McShane 96 pts, Third - Anthony O Hare, John Kelly, David Duffy, Colum Quinn 99pts. Second - Benny Tierney, Seamus Keenan, Paul Lambert, Craig Pearce 99pts First - Pearse Murphy, David Lynch Joe & John McCourt 100 pts. Next week is a Mixed-up Major competition with first, second, third, Gross and the two 9s prizes up for grabs. This is a Spill Assist Golfer of the Year competition and is also a club qualifier.

Young Lorcan Rafferty (16) produced his best round for a while as his 45 points won the Friday Open. Lorcan added 22 pts to his opening 23 to fend off a strong finish (back 9 -24 pts) from James Carragher (17) who ended with 44 pts but was delighted once he finished ahead of third placed playing partner Ciaran Crummy (16) who had 40 points.

There was drama as the July bonus prize of €100 for the best away score which is kindly sponsored by BC ELECTRICS, Dundalk went to a countback with Jonathan Barber (13) beaten on the countback by Cavan man Jason Reilly (18) after both had 37 points. Friday Open Entry Fee- Members £7/€8 Visitors £12/€14 (which includes entry to the 2’s). You can book on-line or through the clubhouse.

The Front 9 Green proved successful for David Lynch in the Wednesday Cup as he booked his place in the final with a winning return of 25 points. The Back 9 White will be in play this week.

Raymond Kelly returned to winning ways with a countback win over Charlie McShane in a round of the Seniors Maritime Trophy. Raymond McCumiskey was third. Next week is a singles stableford.

Moyola Park brought our hopes of a first ever appearance in the final of the Pierce Purcell by defeating us 3-2 at Balmoral on Friday evening. We won the opening two matches but unfortunately faded badly in the next three games as our great run in the competition ended. Team Captain Paddy Malone will have to re-group for next year and hope that they can go one step further.

DUNDALK

CONGRATULATIONS to our Boys U18 team on winning the Leinster Final of the Fred Daly trophy on Friday with a 4-1 win against Greystones and to juvenile captain Eoin Murphy on earning his first international call-up and helping Leinster to the Boys U18 Interprovincial title last week.

our Junior Cup team’s efforts to win a second Leinster pennant in three years ended in heartbreak on Saturday evening in Callan when they were beaten 3-2 by Malahide.

In the morning quarter-final against Mullingar, a 2&1 win for Ciaran Traynor, a 4&3 win for Kyle Rafferty and a 5&4 win for Shane Hession got Dundalk over the line with Brian Renaghan all square after 14 and Clem Walshe two down after 14 when they were called in.

The semi-final was a real topsy turvey affair with the lead shifting several times over the duration of the afternoon before the match went to the wire. Ciaran Traynor lost 3& 2 in the top match and Kyle Rafferty also lost 3&2 but Clem Walshe had a comprehensive 5&4 win before Shane Hession won on the 19th to leave the tie delicately poised at 2-2 with one match out on the course.

There was little between Brian Og Renaghan and his opponent Ryan Gibson but a controversial ruling on the ninth hole saw the Dundalk player denied a win that would have put him two up and instead left all-square at the turn. The pair remained deadlock all the way to 20th hole when Gibson birdied to send Malahide through the final which they subsequently lost to Grange.

Caolan Rafferty suffered in the horrendous weather at last week’s South of Ireland Championship at Lahinch and failed to make it to the matchplay stage. He now faces an anxious wait to see if he has done enough to earn a first ever call-up to the international squad for the upcoming Home Internationals. The Dundalk Junior Cup team, who were kitted out by Golfgraffix.

Martin Byrne (14) needed a superb back nine to capture the Cochrane Cup on Sunday after he and Neil Mullooly (8) shot rounds of 40pts. Byrne had returned 16pts on the front nine where he had three point pars at the third and ninth but blanked the par three fifth and only managed a single point at the sixth and eighth.

A further four points followed from the 10th and 11th before his round exploded into life and he reeled off four successive three point holes from the 12th to 15th before settling for a two point bogey on the 16th and then finishing with pars on the last two holes for six more points.

His 24pts down the back nine was two better than Mullooly who took second overall while Colin Roche (7) with 33pts was the winner of the Gross Prize. Billy Curran (12), Frank Keys (15) and Sean Gallagher (21) were the Category winners. Conor Murphy (15) was the Juvenile winner and Eamonn McEneaney recorded an ace at the par three 17th,

A great back nine helped Connor McCaughey (6) see off the challenge of the ever-improving Joseph Laverty (11) and win last Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford competition. Both finished with 41pts but McCaughey took the overall prize on countback and also recorded the best gross score of the day. Laverty won Category 1 while Ciaran Dunne (13) and Harry O’Hanrahan (26) won the other two categories and Conor Murphy (16) took the Juvenile Prize.

The Captain’s Charity event will be held on Monday, August 7. The morning event will be a Ladies/Gents Open Singles Stableford competition and the afternoon event will be a Two Person Open Team competition. The proceeds will be donated to the Birches Alzheimer Day Care Centre Dundalk. The entrance fee for these competitions will be €10 for members and €20 for guests.
