Impressive comebacks in summer league doubles ties

-

A HIGH-QUALITY field battled it out for crucial summer league doubles points last Thursday night at Greenhills.

In the first match of the night Peter Woods and Jimmy flood took on Tony Lacken and Jein Madden. In a see-saw encounter Tony and Jein were ahead by three shots heading into the last few ends, but Peter and Jimmy showed their battling qualities to mount a superb comeback and scrape through by one shot.

The second match Josephine Moran and Gertie Griffin take on Claire Woods and Aileen Fitzgerald.

Josie and Gertie started brightly and raced into a four-shot lead, forcing their opponents to slowly fight their way back into the contest. Claire and Aileen slowly chipped away at the lead, but Josie and Gertie were still two up heading into the final end.

Ultimately, Claire and Aileen showed nerves of steel to force a draw and a share of the spoils.

In the third match juvenile Megan Devin and senior Val Haggins were pitted against an experienced team in Alice Leonard and Jack Howell. Megan and Val made a blistering start, storming into a five-shot lead. Jack and Alice had a mountain to climb but they managed to find a bit of rhythm and whittled the deficit down to the minimum with one end to play. However Megan and Val held firm in the final end to take a deserved two-shot victory.

The final match of the night saw Anna Farrell and Val Maguire take on Eugene McKenna and Tom Devin. Anna and Val made their intentions known from the outset forcing Eugene and Tom to play catch-up from the first end. And once in the lead Val and Anna defended it brilliantly and try as they might Eugene and Tom could make no headway, losing out by three shots in the end.

This week’s times of play are Thursday 7-8pm for juveniles and 8-10.30pm for seniors. Any members wishing to travel to the Redeemer club on Tuesday night must put their name forward on noticeboard.
