Warning after Mell car park robberies

CALL FOR CCTV AS LARGE NUMBER OF VEHICLES DAMAGED IN RECENT MONTHS

- Fiona MAGENNIS

A call has been made for CCTV to be installed in the public carpark at Mell after a spate of car break-ins at the site over the past two months.

The most recent incident happened on Monday, July 31st when both the driver and passenger windows of an 02 registered Citroen car were smashed with a brick.

A local woman took to social media, sharing pictures of the damage to her car to warn others to be careful when parking around town and in particular in the longstay carpark at Mell.

The ongoing problem of car break-ins in the local area has been well documented in recent weeks with longstay and supermarket carparks and local beauty spots in particular suffering a large number of such incidents in recent weeks.

The post attracted a huge amount of comment with a number of people revealing they too have had their cars broken into while parked in the free longstay carpark.

They called for the installation of CCTV in the parking area to try to deter similar incidents in the future or identify those involved in these malicious crimes.

‘ The council or gardaí should install CCTV. A lot of anti-social behaviour going on around here,’ one person commented on the Facebook post.

Writing on the Spotted: Facebook Page, the woman whose car was attacked said there is CCTV on the recycling bins but not in the corners of the carpark.

‘I reported it and the guards said it happens regularly in that carpark,’ she said.

The woman said that although she had nothing in the car at the time, the thieves still smashed two of her windows and broke into the glove compartment of the car.

A brick, presumably used in the attack, can clearly be seen in the front seat of the vehicle surrounded by broken glass from the windows.

Meanwhile, also on July 31st, four cars were broken into in the Cedarfield estate.

Money and a child’s epi pen were stolen from one of the cars targeted in the attack.
