Great memories of 24 years with council
JOE GALLAGHER, the man with the magic street cleaner, retired from his role with Louth County Council last Thursday - but with a bagfull of great memories.
Joe spent 24 years in the service of the people and before that had 26 years in Ushers at Greenhills. And before that, he worked in Morco as a kid.
‘I’ve been working for 52 years so I suppose it’s time for a rest,’ he told the Drogheda Independent.
Joe will now spend time with his family - and his garden - but says his memories of great colleagues will always be with him.
‘I met some wonderful people, the likes of Tony Kinny, Paddy Kelly, Mickey Byrne, Jimmy Maguire, Gerry Buckley, Tom Cunningham, Gerry Branigan, Mickey Ryan , Pat Hackett and Paddy McKeown and so many more,’ he states.
He says there’s been many incidents in his time with the council, but coming across a dead 15ft snake on a Sunday morning with two colleagues was pretty unique.
‘We found it on Duke Street. It was an Indian python,’ he recalled.
‘ The public were always very nice to me and I appreciate that.
‘We maintain the town to the best we can and hope that people understand that,’ he added.
