Peter Kelly and playing for the ‘Blackbirds’

-

FROM time to time, I pluck items from the files and here’s one from 60 years ago - the death of Peter Kelly from John Street.

In his day, Peter had a lively interest in sport and in his younger days played for an old football team called the “Blackbirds.” A devout. Catholic, he was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Sodality and the Third Order of St. Francis.

He was a veteran of World War I and while on active service was awarded the D.C.M. for conspicuous gallantry.

Chief mourners were Mrs. Mary A. Kelly (widow), Messrs. Peter, Patrick. Christopher and Thomas Kelly (sons). Mrs. A. Smith, Mrs. C Deegan and Miss Peggy Kelly (daughters), Mr. S. Smith and Mr. P. Deegan (sons-in-law ) and grandchildren.
