THE MD Sports Poc Fada Finals took place in excellent weather at Annaverna Mountain on Sunday last and it was the Galway contingent who had further reason to celebrate on a memorable weekend for the Tribesmen.

Galway’s hurlers made up the third part of a unique treble with their victory over Tipperary in Croke Park on Sunday as they followed the achievements of Tadgh Haran (51pocs+18m) and Susan Earner (26pocs+ 10m) who took home the MD Sports All-Ireland titles in both sections.

Haran beat Laois representative Eoin Reilly into second place, with the defending champion James McInerney of Clare back in fifth place and nine-time winner Brendan Cummins in sixth. Louth’s contender Gerard Smith finished a creditable eighth of the 11 finalists.

Six camogie players battled for the honours in their competition and Earner beat Aine O’Loughlin from Clare into second place.

Molly Lynch of Cork won the Under-16 camogie title on a score of 31 pods + 67m and Cathal Kiely from Offaly completed back-toback titles in the Under-16 Poc Fada Final, emulating the feat of his brother Ruairi who did the double in the U-16 competitions in 2011 and 2012.

The musical entertainment for the afternoon was presented by the talented musicians on violins and harps from the Cuchalainn Celtic Strings, to a very appreciative crowd which was larger than usual as a result of the fine weather.

Ulster GAA Chairperson Michael Hasson, Pat Doherty from the GAC in Croke Park, Elizabeth Flynn of the Camogie Association and Humphrey Kelleher (chairperson, AnPoc Fada) were in attendance alongside the event’s sponsor of 22 years, Martin Donnelly of MD Sports.
