VICE-CAPTAIN Paddy Malone (7) was the one who was not all mixed up as he captured the Mixed-up Major singles stableford competition at the weekend.

The format for the mixed-up major went down a treat with members as the course was played a different way round, with play starting at hole 13 and an outward par of 37 in comparison to an inward par of 33.

Paddy was a countback winner from Daniel Hughes (7) after both returned 42 points. Shane Toale (13) was third on the countback from fellow 40-pointers Stephen Cunningham (20), Club Captain Seamus McParland (12) and Pearse Murphy (11).

There was consolation for Pearse (23pts) as he won the front 9, with the back 9 going to Graham McNally with 21 points. Colin Pilkington (3) was the Gross winner. The Murphy’s, Meigh-sponsored August Medal will take place next weekend.

When you hit a good patch in golf it is important to make the most of it, which is what young Lorcan Rafferty (14) has done. Despite a two-shot loss for winning the previous week’s Friday Open, Lorcan hit form to record backto-back victories as his 41 points made him a one-point winner over Christopher Reel (14), with Cormac Smyth (12) finishing third on the countback with Luke Owens (8) after both returned 38 points.

The lead score for the best visitor for the month of August has been set at 36 points by Sean Kelly (13) from Killymoon.

Caolan Rafferty and Eoin Murphy have been called up to the Ireland teams for this month’s men’s and boys Home Internationals. It will be a first international appearance for both players and is recognition for the excellent seasons that both players have had.

With Josh Mackin having already appeared for the Irish Boys U-16 team at the Home Internationals in Wales, it means that Dundalk Golf Club has now produced three Ireland internationals in the one year.

Rafferty will be one of two new caps in an Ireland team that is bidding for a fourth successive triumph in the Home Internationals when they tee off at Moortown on August 16th, while Murphy is one of seven new caps in the Ireland team for the Boys U-18 Home Internationals at St Anne’s Old Links from today until Thursday, where hosts England will be defending the title they won last year in Ballyliffen.

Murphy recently led the Fred Daly team to the Leinster title and it was one of his teammates, four-handicapper Sean Laverty, who lifted the Knights of Malta Cup on Sunday on a countback from Michael Keating (16), Aidan Thornton (8) and Tom Clarke (17),

All three finished with scores of three under par, 69, but Laverty’s back nine of 32 was enough to give him the overall prize, with Keating taking the runners up spot. There was some consolation for Thornton and Clarke as they won category one and three respectively. Eddie Rogers, off three, took the gross prize with a 73.

After eight holes of his round few would have bet on Laverty being in the final shake-up as a double bogey six at the fourth and bogies at the first and eighth meant he was standing at three over par nett when he stood on the ninth tee.

But he then birdied the par three hole and that kick-started his round as he reeled off another two birdies down the back nine as well as seven pars to cover the home stretch in 34 gross and 32 nett and that was enough to pip Keating for the overall prize.
