Coll on saddened by the loss of Mattock Rangers Stalwart Peter Corrigan

-

THE village of Collon was shocked and saddened at the passing of one of their Legends Mr Peter Corrigan.

Peter passed away on 30th June 2017 after a short illness.

Born in 1938 in Monasterboice, Peter was the eldest of a family of eleven.

He made Collon his home a few years later.

He met the love of his life Kitty Englishby in 1959 and they were married in 1962, 55 years ago.

They had two children, Majella and Gerard, and six grandchildren.

He was a very loyal and proud family man, so proud of his children and grandchildren and indeed loved all his extended family.

Peter was a much loved character around the village of Collon.

He was known to everyone and was easily identified by his trademark red hat. He was a people’s person and genuinely loved talking to people, always ready for the chat and the banter and had time for everyone.

He was popular with young and old and this was evident by the large attendance to his home to pay their respects and also by the large attendance present at his Funeral Mass and Obsequies.

A deeply religious man, Peter in particular had great devotion to Padre Pio.

He worked as part of the parish committee for many years and did collections at the weekly masses.

His main interest in life was music and football.

Always fond of an old singsong Peter loved to sing at Weddings, parties and special occasions.

He loved the Greenscene on a Saturday morning.

He loved traditional music and in particular he loved John Flood who kindly sang at his funeral mass along with another of his idols, Mr. Jim Finnegan.

Peter’s real passion was football and he was involved in the GAA all his life.

Praised for his dedication to his Community, he gave loyal service to both his club Mattock Rangers and to his county Louth for many years.

He was very proud of the fact that he was the first person from Mattock Rangers to hold an officership with the Louth Senior County Board when he was their PRO from 1992-1999.

Peter served as PRO and Vice Chairman for Mattock Rangers for a number of years and also served on many committees.

He was Clubman of the year in the centenary year 1984 and more recently was awarded the Hall of Fame in 2014 which he was very proud off.

One of his proudest moment was when in 2002 Mattock Rangers took home the Joe Ward to Collon and became the Senior Champions for the first time in the history of the Club.

Peter gave a great interview to Gerry Kelly of LMFM after this momentous occasion.

His son Gerard is now carrying on the football tradition and is a well know referee in the County.

Highly regarded by all that knew him, Peter was a people’s person and had a gift which is rare nowadays in that material things meant nothing to him. Family and friends were everything to him.

Peter is very much missed around the village of Collon and will always be remembered as a good community person.

Peter is survived by his wife Kitty, daughter Majella and son Gerrard, son-in-law Derek, Caroline, grandchildren Cillian, Shane, Rian, Laura, Craig and Louise, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-inlaw, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and large circle of friends.
