Gate closes on Friday to town traffic

-

ONE of the biggest moments in the town’s recent history will unfold this Friday with the closure of Laurence’s Gate to traffic.

The Gate has been an entry point for vehicles for centuries and the event is likely to attract international headlines - never mind national ones.

The whole process has seen ‘People Power’ at its best and the volunteers who pushed the project from the middle of last year can be rightly proud of their efforts.

However, the changes will take a bit of getting used to, especially the fact that vehicles coming up from Constitution Hill must stop to give way to traffic on the Cord Road, turning right up Francis Street. Vehicles coming up the steep hill had a choice of two routes, but that’s now down to one.

It should alsp be noted that traffic exiting Jim Garry Way has right of way at the Palace/King St and William Street junction.
