Upper third of the Gate blown away

-

THE upper one-third of Laurence’s Gate is newer than the lower portion as part of it was blown away during a previous seige of the town.

In 1950, Mr. James J. Garry, 1 Duke St, noticed that the upper one-third of St. Laurence’s Gate looks newer than the lower portion.

The generally accepted explanation is that the upper part was blown away during some of the earlier seiges of the walled town and was rebuilt.

In the evening time, when looked upon from the western side or in the morning when looked upon from the eastern side, the slanting rays of the sun reveal very clearly the difference between the upper and lower portions of the Gate.
