Frank’s old cottage rises from the ashes

-

THE blessing of Frank’s Country Cottage in Donore took place recently where family, friends and neighbours gathered to celebrate the rebuilding and refurbishment of the 17th century historic thatched cottage and outbuildings that were virtually destroyed by arson in 2008.

Boyne Valley Cottage is owned and occupied by Cllr Frank Godfrey, who has welcomed thousands of visitors across the half-door threshold over the years, including politicians, singers, entertainers, farmers, musicians, historians, locals, tourists – and even Daniel O’Donnell himself!

Joe Donnelly and his horse and trap took Fr Jim Donleavy along the roads and lanes of Donore for a trip Down Memory Lane. A country man and farmer at heart, Corkman Fr Jim has a great interest in horses.

The Blessing of the Cottage and Gardens was performed by Fr Jim, assisted by Augustinian prior Fr Colm O’Mahony. Two members of the Medical Missionaries of Mary also joined in prayer.

Some céilí house music was performed by local trad musicians Pat Gogan, Tom Morrison and Hugh Conlon. Fr Donleavy sang an Irish song to add to the proceedings.

Pat Fulham, who is presently writing a book on the folklore of Donore, also attended. There was a cup of tea and buns to follow.

‘I’m trying to keep the past alive in this historic cottage, built back in the 1600s and opened to the public since the 1980s,’ said Frank. ‘Since the fire in 2008, like the phoenix, the cottage has risen from the ashes! It’s been a difficult journey, but we now have the old homestead back on the map.’
