Mornington
WHEN IS A TREE NOT A TREE?
When it’s a death trap. When one exits Coneyhall (Mornington) to access the main road, there is a tree on the left at the junction. This tree would not be described as a sapling. Why this is so is because its circumference is eleven and a half feet; three and a half metre approx. One has to edge out on to the main road inch by inch to get into a position that is half safe. The tree itself has seen better days. There is a peculiar aspect related to the tree and the local authority, (Meath County Council). A neighbour of mine contacted the Co–council and she explained that the tree was a danger to motorists,
Apparently the Co council stated that it could not be felled. It’s not that it’s a work of art.
it’s a gnarly knobbly specimen of sheer ugliness. Not the poor trees fault, it’s just the hand it was dealt. There is one outstanding question that must be asked. if this tree contributed to a fatality or injury to anyone would the cocouncil take responsibility?
SAND SAILORS ARE COMING!
Bettystown beach will be the place to be from Sept 10th to 15th as it will witness a sport that is going from strength to strength and that is the European sand yachting championships. This is the fifty second anniversary of the competition. This magnificent spectacle was held on the Bettystown beach thirty-four years ago in 1983 there will be over one hundred top land sailors coming from all over Europe and a further afield to take part in this five-day show piece. This activity is becoming very popular and is expected to attract huge crowds, local and internationally. Twelve European titles will be up for grabs over the five days. Nature will also give a hand as well seeing that the yachts will be wind powered.

CHILDLINE VOLUNTEERS
The Louth/Meath branch of the ISPCC is recruiting for our Childline service and our next training course is due to start at the end of September. We recruit volunteers from all over the Louth and Meath area and are eager to add to our fantastic team. The first step in becoming a volunteer is to attend an information evening (on one of a choice of evenings). This is an opportunity for people to come along and hear about the service, and what is involved in volunteering. They would also have a chance to hear from an already active volunteer. I have scheduled these for Monday 28th August, Tuesday 5thSeptember and Thursday 14th September. All sessions will begin at 6.30pm, and anyone interested is invited to attend. They will be held at our office here in Drogheda (Distillery House, Dyer Street, Drogheda, Co Louth). Anyone interested in attending one of the information evenings should contact me on 041-9809964 or dlambe@ispcc. ie to book a place.
