Returning to Grenfell after so many years

-

THE disaster that unfolded in Grenfell Tower in London some months ago continues to impact on the daily lives of so many people in that part of the city.

And for Mell native, Kevin McCarthy the sight of the towers always reminds him of his days serving the very people that lived there.

Kevin went to London in 1964 and joined the social services in 1968 and qualified as a social worker in 1975.

His early days were in Chelsea and Kensington and he often visited the tower.

‘ There were 23 stories and even then you’d come across people sleeping on the stairways,’ he stated.

Back in Drogheda last week on holidays, he revealed he left the area to work in Camden in 1986 and a year later was close to the King’s Cross subway fire, helping families in the days after that disaster.

He went back to Grenfell in June and says he admires those who have had to continue on with their lives.
