Great Boyne canal project has come a long way over the last 30 years
THE first opening of the Boyne Canal at Oldbridge in over 50 years drew crowds of over 3,000 exactly 30 years ago.
The work carried out since then has been enormous.
Drogheda’s Mayor, Alderman. Tommy Murphy, performed the official opening of the two-mile stretch in the company of Louth Co. Council chairman John McConville, Senator Jimmy Mulroy, organising committee chairman Alderman Frank Godfrey and secretary Tomas O hEochaidh.
The committee which organised the event consisted of Boyne Valley Tourism Development Association members.
Very Rev. John C. O’Reilly, PP, St. Mary’s, Drogheda, performed the blessing and paid tribute to local effort in opening the canal.
Mr. McConville highlighted the support pledged by Louth Co. Council towards further development of the canal in conjunction with Meath Co. Council. Meath Co. Council chairman John Murtagh also attended.
