CLUBS from near and far made the journey to Drogheda to compete in the Boyne AC Sports Day, the penultimat­e event on the local 2017 track & field calendar.

From the host club’s point of view, the popular annual competitio­n was hugely successful, and the day got off to a brilliant start with a win for Calum Byrne in the Under-9 60m sprint and a silver in the 300m, adding to his bronze in the turbo javelin.

Cormac McEvoy ran a great race to finish 2nd in the 300m, as did Shruthi Spassad in the Girls 60m race, while Caoimhe Martin threw a super 9.26m to finish third in the girls turbo javelin.

The Under-10 events were hotly contested and Oliver Carolan continued his dominance on the track with a win in the 80m sprint and silver medals in both the turbo and long jump.

In the girls races, Shola Lawrence made light work of her events, winning both the 80m and 300m, with Kate Culhane taking bronze over the 300m distance.

Eimear Cooney ran a great race to take bronze in the Under-11 Girls 80m, as did Diarmuid Devine in the boys sprint.

Emmet McEvoy took a well-deserved silver in the 500m, finishing just behind Shea O’Donnell who swept the boards in the Under-11 Boys events, taking gold in his 80m, 500m and turbo javelin.

Aaron Fennell took bronze in the Boys Under-12 100m and Under-13 javelin and added a silver in the long jump.

Turning back to the girls events, Saran Meite had another successful day on the track as she claimed victory in the Under-13 100m sprint and a second place finish in the 600m, just pipped at the post by clubmate Siofra Devine who claimed the gold. Siofra also took bronze in the sprint and long jump.

In the Boys Under-13 600m race it was a one-two for Boyne, with Neil Culhane crossing the line ahead of teammate Danny Nugent, while in the javelin Max Kingston threw 30.78m to take silver.

Anna Faulkner continued her fine run of form as she once again took gold in the Under-14 800m, with Caer NiGhibne not far behind in second place.

In the Boys Under-15 events Calum Sheedy took bronze in his 100m and 800m, with Euan Canniffe winning the boys shot putt and javelin and Killian McLoughlin taking bronze in the shot.
