CLOVERHILL

YOUNG Jamie Duffy capped off what has been an very eventful week for him on and off the course in fine style by capturing the Fred Daly Qualifier competition.

Jamie (5) will head to Lisburn on Friday week for the Mary Peters Trust run Fred Daly Annual competition. The A star pupil and golfer will be well able to absorb the pressure of keeping this prestigious trophy in the club for the third consecutive year following the previous wins of the Pilkington brothers (David (twice) and Colin.

With Captains Day next week there was no holding back from some golfers in this qualifier as the scoring reflected. Jamie held off his nearest challenger and playing partner David Hamill (9) who finished runner-up with 41 pts one more than Kevin Haughey (23) who in turn had a point to spare over his mate Eamon Devlin (18). With the leading quartet all losing a shot will it be costly next Sunday in the biggest prize of the lot Seamus McParland’s Captain’s Day.

With plenty of early betting activity already done and the starting times and playing partners known the momentum is rising as the biggest golfing day of the year the Captain’s Prize is there to be won. On Sunday next Seamus McParland will host his Captains Day.

Realistically the schedule for the popular Captain Seamus begins on Thursday morning when the Seniors take centre stage followed by the Juveniles on Saturday morning, the Captain’s friends and guests at midday Saturday followed by a meal.

The real battle (which will dwarf the earlier Mayweather v McGregor contest) begins at 7am on Sunday as members try to qualify for the play-off 9 holes as they bid to get their hands on any of the 14 Waterford Crystal prizes on offer especially the stunning Captain’s piece. No doubt Seamus will have a terrific day and night as the members honour his year of captaincy.

We will soon have to change the name of the BC Electrics, Dundalk (0035342 9338140) sponsored Friday Open to the Lorcan Rafferty Open as he took his winning total to three last Friday. Since the arrival of our resident PGA professional Keith Shannon this Summer Lorcan has seen his handicap tumble from 17 to 10 as he shot 44 points on Friday on his way to a third open victory. Runner-up was club Treasurer Emmett Fearon (12) on the countback from visitor Seamus McArdle (17) after both finished on the scratch mark of 36 points.

Ashfield’s Seamus now takes over on the better back 9 from Sean Kelly (13) Killymoon for the best visitor for the Month of August bonus prize of €100 sponsored by Charlie McShane of BC Electrics with just this Friday to count. Friday Open Entry Fee- Members £7/€8 Visitors £12/€14 (which includes entry to the 2’s). You can book on-line or through the clubhouse.

Vice Captain Paddy Malone emerged the overall winner of the Front 9 White marker contest in the Wednesday Cup which came to a terrific conclusion on Wednesday.

Paddy was nearly assured of success before round 5 off this section concluded as his 3 best cards were already a long way in front of the chasing pack. For the participants there was a place in the 18 hole final to play for.

It turned into a great contest in one fourball as Daniel Hughes beat Kevin Haughey on an extended countback after both returned 24 points one better than Gareth Gorman. This week is the last week off the Back 9 Green Markers.

Raymond Kelly was the winner of the Seniors Golfer of the year round on Thursday with John Hazzard in second place. This Thursday the Seniors at 10 am will be playing 18 holes for Seamus McParland’s Captain’s Prize.
