MEATH County Council (MCC) has issued a direction to the owners of the Old Mill Site in Julianstown requiring them to carry out extensive works to make the site safe.

The direction was made in accordance with the provisions of The Derelict Sites Act, 1990.

The works must be carried out within four months of the date of the direction taking effect on September 4th.

The direction requires that building Number 2 be retained and made safe and a structural assessment / report by a conservation grade structural engineer be submitted to the Conservation Officer at MCC within 4 weeks to agree aspects of the original mill structure to be retained and items seen fit for removal/demolition.

The first floor stair with identified roof structures failing, can be removed - pending the outcome of an extensive structural investigation.

It states that building number 3 can be demolished.

Building number 1 (at the corner of the Duleek Road) must have adequate propping installed to protect the defective roof and floor structures. Work is also to be undertaken to repair and make watertight the roof, to infill all openings with concrete block work, to replace all missing gutters and down pipes in the original materials, to seal all of the exterior of the building, to remove all graffiti from the exterior of the building and have it painted ‘ to provide for a neat appearance’.

It also states that all weeds and overgrown vegetation to be removed from the entire site but established trees are to be retained.
