Tell the stories of the Boyne Valley

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

Local businessman Malachy McCloskey has put his deep-rooted passion for Irish history, myths and legends to good us re-publishing the ‘ The Boyne Valley Irish Legends’ book and CD last week.

The book features classics tales including The Salmon of Knowledge, The Children of Lír and Cúchulainn.

‘ These are the stories that I grew up with,’ Malachy explains. ‘I could picture their heroes in my imagination. I loved how clever and brave they were when faced with danger. These Irish legends are timeless. I shared them with my children when they were small and I credit these stories with firing their love of reading. Re-publishing this book is my way of bringing these wonderful stories to new generations.’

Written by Brenda Maguire, the book features beautiful illustrations by Peter Haigh. The CD features music by The Chieftains and stories read by Irish icons such as Maureen Potter, Gay Byrne and John B. Keane among others.

‘I’ve watched Louth County Council embrace the Ireland’s Ancient East campaign. I’ve seen them bring mythology and stories of the region right to the heart of our tourism offering. The Boyne Valley region is so rich in mythology so I through that now is time to bring the book back into Irish households,’ Malachy said at the launch in Drogheda’s Tholsel.

Louth County Council jumped at the chance to be involved in this project. Mary T Daly said: ‘When Malachy approached us suggesting re-publishing the book we knew it was a perfect fit. Re-publishing of ‘Irish Legends’ is yet another demonstration of his personal commitment to tourism and heritage in the region and one that we sincerely appreciate.’

The Book of Irish Legends is on sale at JoJo’s Newsagents on West Street Drogheda. The book and CD at €5.
