Christopher Kierans and his bakers trip to Russia

Back in Drogheda after a 17-day trip that took him to Denmark, Finland and Russia is Christopher Kierans, Lourdes Square, a member of the Irish Bakers and Confectioners Union. With him on the trip were Mr. John Swift, the General Secretary of the Irish Union and Mr. Peter Flanagan, Secretary of the Dublin No. 1 Branch of the same Union.

In their 1,489 mile outward voyage from Tilsbury Docks, the party visited Denmark and Finland, meeting representatives of the International Food and Drink Workers’ Union in both Copenhagen and Helsinki. Guided by the representatives of this international union, the Irish delegates toured bakeries and breweries in these northern cities, studying working methods and noting conditions. They then boarded a train which took them on a 500 mile trip through Russia and in Leningrad and Moscow again toured breweries and bakeries.
