Drogheda Classical Music Series line up

- Fiona MAGENNIS

Drogheda Classical Music returns this September with a stellar line up of artists.

Set up to bring world-class performers to Ireland, the 17/18 series has attracted some top names, many of whom are often seen performing in London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall or with the leading orchestras around the world. It is the only series of its kind across the entire North East and offers an intimate concert experience for audience and performers alike.

The opening concert comes fresh from the 2017 Edinburgh International Festival. On Friday 8th September at 7:30pm, musician Peter Whelan, an artist on the crest of a wave, brings his own group, the sensational Scottish Ensemble Marsyas along with special guests, mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty and Alec Frank- Gemmill (horn) to perform a concert based on works made famous by the Italian superstar castratro singer, Tenducci. Giusto Tenducci was the darling of the opera houses across Europe in the mid-18th century, including La Scala and Covent Garden but caused huge scandal in Ireland when he eloped with the teenage daughter of a wealthy and highly-regarded Dublin barrister.

Through gorgeous music including Handel’s ‘Va Tacito’ ‘Scherza Infida’ and Gluck’s ‘Che Faro Senza Euridice’, they’ll tell the account of this great artist who taught singing to Mozart and had music written for him by Handel. This concert is exclusive to Drogheda and will not be repeated anywhere else in Ireland.

Other Drogheda-only concerts in the Series include violinist Alina Ibragimova with pianist Cédric Tiberghien in November, the internationally acclaimed German- Canadian cellist Johannes Moser with Russian pianist Andrei Korobeinikov in January. Advance tickets for concerts are €19 & €17 online / phone or €20 & €18 on the door. Student / children’s tickets are €5 with a special full season ticket for just €100. Booking is open through Droichead Arts Centre on 9833946 or www.droichead.com
