SEAN O’MAHONY’S

Our Under 12s won their county semi-final against a gallant Dundalk Young Irelands on Thursday evening in what turned out to be a very exciting game. In a low scoring encounter in which both goalkeepers made some fine saves, aided by some last gap defending and blocking by their respective backlines, which ensured there was no green flags raised even though there was plenty of action in both goalmouths. The O’Mahony’s lads pulled away in the last 10 minutes, upping the tempo and kicking the last three points of the game to secure a place in the U12 division 4A County final on Monday week, the 4th, in Darver at 7pm. All 21 players got a game, and all played their part in securing the win that means this group of players are now through to what will be for most, the first of hopefully many finals, that they will play in the green and gold jerseys. Team: Conor Crawley, Tiernan Rodgers, Jack Gray, Aaron Heaney, Conor Cooney, Aaron Webb, Sam Cassidy, Feidhlim O’Callaghan, Sean Dawe, Daniel Crawley 0-2, Thomas McCahill, Kayden Fisher, Christian Mulligan 0-2. Patrick Hillen-McCann, Eddie, Cillian Lavery 0-1, Daniel Martin, Conall Mullins, Calum Fitzsimons, Conor Teather, Carl Bevin.

Our Junior team had a great 10 point win over Dundalk Young Irelands on Tuesday night in the league. Our lads led by 1-8 to 0-5 at half time, but by the end, they had stretched that out to 2-15 to 1-8, the goals coming from Eoin Hanratty and Barry Mackin. Team: Paudie McConnville, Robbie Clarke, Pat O Brien 0-1, Kevin Quinn, Niall McLoughlin 0-1, Alan Waters, Colin Finan 0-1, Sean Murphy 0-2, Kyle Carroll 0-1, Sean Mathews, Barry Mackin 1-5, Eoin Hanratty 1-0, Vinny Smith 0-1, Liam McKenny 0-2. The following Monday our U12s play their county final in Darver against Oilibhéar Pluincéad’s at 7pm.

The Movie Night planned for the weekend of the 9th September has been postponed as our senior team play the Gaels in their replay that weekend, but it will be rescheduled. NAOMH Fionnbarra battled to a hard-fought 2-13 to 3-5 win over Clans in the Ladies Intermediate Football Championship at the weekend.

Clans launched the first few attacks but failed to hit the target and Naomh Fionnbarra missed a few chances before Marianne Hullen and Marie-Claire Rodgers set Roisin Osborne up for the first point of the game.

The Clans replied shortly afterwards, but good defensive work by captain, Ellen Butterly, and Heather Rogers kept the Dundalk side at bay and a super save by Ashley Callaghan denied them a certain goal.

Jeni Devlin and Roisin Osbourne combined to carve out a Marrianne Hullen point before Leanne Sharkey added a free and a point from play. Becky Woods extended the lead and Sharkey converted another free which was followed by Katie McArdle’s first point of the championship, helping her side to a six-point half-time lead.

The Clans came out all cylinders blazing and tested the Ashley Callaghan again, but the first goal came at tyhe other end when Ciara McMahon out ran her marker along the sideline and sent the ball into the path of Jeni Devlin, who found the back of the net.

Leanne Sharkey cancelled out a Clans’ point moments later and the Barrs rattled the net minutes later when Maria Butterly worked the ball up the field with the help of Marie-Claire Rodgers to the newly introduced Denise Moynagh who made a dream start with a goal.

The Clans didn’t give up and hit back with two goals in quick succession.

Laura Sharkey replied with a point, but was yellow carded shortly after.

The Barr’s defence had to withstand some serious pressure, but Ellen Butterly kicked a fine point, followed by another from Denise Moynagh.

The Clans cut the deficit with another goal and a point, but Shauna Markey ensured the Barr’s remained in control.

It was great win for Naomh Fionnbarra bringing them a step closer to a place in the Championship semi-final. They will play Naomh Mairtin in their final group game. NAOMH FIONNBARRA: Ashley Callaghan, Maria Butterly, Heather Rodgers, Shauna Markey (0-1), Roisin Osborne (0-1), Ellen Butterly (0-1), Leah Cassidy, Marie-Claire Rodgers, Jeni Devlin (1-0), Ann-Marie Breen, Marianne Hullen (0-1), Katie McArdle (0-1), Becky Woods (0-1), Laura Sharkey (0-2), Leanne Sharkey (0-4, 3f).
