THIS year’s meeting of Laytown Races will take place on the beach on Tues 5th Sept. First race scheduled to take place at 5.00pm.

The first recorded race meeting at Laytown was in 1868 and next year 2018 will be the 150th anniversar­y of this truly unique event.

Laytown Races is the only racing event run on a beach, and under the control of the Turf Club, held anywhere in Europe. The races will be transmitte­d live to countries worldwide by way of Sky’s At the Races network. Punters as far away as China and India will follow in real time the fortunes of their horses on the strand at Laytown.

Preparatio­ns are already well advanced for race day and the Race Field is undergoing its annual facelift for the event. Racegoers will see several notable improvemen­ts to the facilities this year including a new parade ground for horses and jockeys and a greatly enhanced tiered viewing area for our the people in the race field overlookin­g the finishing post.

Parking facilities are available for all who attend both north and south of the field and a shuttle bus service will transfer racegoers to the field. As usual there is huge interest from abroad from interested journalist­s The Comm. of Laytown races welcome these people from France USA and Italy who will arrive to record for their readers this unique event.

Most exciting of all will be the presence of the BBC’s Travel Show crew who intend recording a 15 min slot for their programme which goes out to an audience of 58 million.

The most important visitors however are the loyal supporters who have made the journey to Laytown for many years and who see Laytown Strand races for what it really is a different exciting day’s racing by the magnificen­t stretch of sand in Co Meath. It’s not Ascot or Goodwood or Punchestow­n its Laytown and Meath people are exceptiona­lly proud of our Annual Festival.
