Fifty years ago this week, at the height of the ‘Summer of Love’, when upwards of 100,000 mostly young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco for the mother of all hippie gatherings, Scott McKenzie’s ‘San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers in Your Hair)’ was one of their unofficial anthems – a key song on the soundtrack of the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Written by ‘Papa’ John Phillips of The Mamas The Papas, it was a hit around the world and is one of the best selling singles ever, with over seven million sold. McKenzie, born Philip Wallach Blondheim III, never scored another solo hit, but did co-write ‘Kokomo’, a number one for the Beach Boys in the US and Australia in 1988. McKenzie died in 2012 at the age of 73, eleven years after the death of his friend John Philips.
