THE Club Strokeplay took place last Tuesday in dry but cool conditions and there was a good entry - although only one senior player took part.

Winner of the Gents competition was Wally Sheridan with 95 gross, the runner-up was Sean Clerkin (100) and the 18 nett winner was Frank Andrews. Cathy Richardson took the ladies prize after recording a score of 123 gross, the runner-up was Marie Black with 125 and Marie Brennan won the 18 nett with 51.

CLOVERHILL

THE first starter, Liam Harte (19) at 7 am, posted a high qualifying target as he returned 38 points which prevailed all day, as the cut mark, to qualify for the third 9 play-off as members were out in force vying to win Captain’s Day which was hosted by Seamus McParland. When the last tee-off time 12-30pm returned their scores there were a total of 16 qualifiers ranging from 38 pts to that of leading qualifier David Lynch (21) who held a 4 point lead with 44 points.

Fintan McAleenan (17) 39pts, and James Carragher (15) 38pts. because of work commitments were unable to take their places in the play-off. Ironically the play-off holes (10,11,12, 16,17,18,1,6,and7) were started once again by Liam Harte (Liam had won runner-up prize in the Bosco Society in between times) alongside Cormac Smyth (11) 38pts. Next up were Paul McCoy (22) 38pts, Niall Owens (14) 38pts. and Justin Byrne (12) 39pts. Followed by Dee McEvoy (10), David Hamill (8), and Gerard Loye (18) all on 39 pts. The penultimate group was Eugene Muckian (27), 39 pts.,Liam O Hare (11) and Miceal Byrnes (16) both on 40 pts. The last group contained leader David Lynch and the father ans son combination of Benny (11) and Conor (15) Tierney both with 40 pts.

On a beautiful evening watched by a large crowd of members, the winning target was in early as Justin “burned up the third 9” with a one over par round for 23 points to sit as clubhouse leader with 62 points. As the final group made their way to the first hole with 3 to play, all three were still in with a chance of glory, although leader David had seen his four point advantage evaporate. The father and son duel was captivating as they went head to head both needing a birdie par finish to come out top of the pile. Benny ended up with 22 points to tie Justin but lose out on the countback via the third 9 score. Justin headed for the BAR, this time though it was to get a round in as he was the 2017 Captain’s Prizewinner which was an exquisite piece of Waterford Crystal. Needless to say the nighttime presentation and festivities lasted a while to bring to a perfect conclusion a terrific day to honour our hard working and very popular Captain Seamus.

Result: Winner-Justin Byrne, Runner-up- Brendan Tierney, Third- Eugene Muckian, FourthNiall Owens, Gross- Colin Pilkington, Leading Qualifier - David Lynch, Front 9-Liam O Hare, Back 9- Ciaran Finnegan, Third 9-Conor Tierney- Amen Corner-Miceal Burns, Best Dressed-James Carragher, Ladies- Ann McGivern, Seniors-Charlie McShane, Runner-up- Pius Tierney, Guests- Craig Campbell (Warrenpoint).

The attraction in the Friday Open for visitors was to see if they could capture the best visitor for the Month of August bonus prize of €100 sponsored by Charlie McShane of BC Electrics, Dundalk. The winner with 41 points after a few close misses was Cormac Smyth (12) as he was not afraid of getting cut before Captain’s Day. Runner -up was visitor Ian Corey (16) who did the double by picking up second prize money to go with the best away score for the month of August which was 37 pts to give him the added €100 bonus. Rolan McGarry (28) was third with 36 points.

Friday Open Entry Fee- Members £7/€8 Visitors £12/€14 (which includes entry to the 2’s). You can book on-line or through the clubhouse.

The last week playing off the Back 9 Green Markers proved to be one of despair and joy for Benny Tierney. The despair came when Connor McLoughlin competing in his first Wednesday Cup denied him a place in the 18 hole final as his return of 24 points beat Benny by one. The joy came as his 3 best cards over the 5 week’s of play56pts saw him win the Sectional prize from Emmett Fearon 54 and Seamus Keenan 52.

There was also a new face through to the final as the last week’s play off the Back 9 White Markers took place. John Smith was only 2 over for the 9 holes netting him 25 points which saw off second placed Gerard Loye who had 23 in far more testing conditions on Wednesday night. It was club Secretary Mark Shevlin who was celebrating as the Sectional winner with 67 which was well clear of Raymond Kelly 59 and Gerard Loye 58.

The fourth and final Section the Back 9 Green markers will take place this coming week as the last chance to qualify should attract a big field.

Following the success of our Friday Open sponsor Charlie McShane of BC Electric’s, Dundalk in winning the Captain’s prize for Seniors it was another Charlie O Haire who took the honours this Thursday with Seamus McCoy second and Richard Harper in third place.
