AN evening celebratin­g Francis Ledwidge’s Centenary 1917-2017 is taking place on Saturday September 23 in the Droichead Arts Centre, Stockwell St, Drogheda.

It will be an evening of Poetry, Music, Film and History, featuring composer Michael Holohan, poet Susan Connolly and guests.

It will be the Drogheda launch of Susan’s new sequence of poems about Francis Ledwidge, The Orchard Keeper (Shearsman Books UK, 2017). The title of the sequence refers to the McGoona family’s orchard at Donaghmore, Navan, Co. Meath where Francis Ledwidge spent many a happy day with his close friend Matty McGoona violinist and naturalist.

The Hills are Crying is a new song cycle by the composer Michael Holohan and includes settings of poems by Francis Ledwidge. Featuring the soprano from Drogheda Hannah O’Brien, Rebecca Draisey- Collishaw oboe/cor anglais and Michael Holohan piano.

During the first half of the evening Rosemary Yore, Chair of the Francis Ledwidge Museum and the Centenary Committee, will speak about the poet, Slane and the Centenary commemorat­ions.

A rare archival film on the life and work of Francis Ledwidge will also be shown.

After the interval Liam O’Meara, poet, author of Francis Ledwidge: Poet Activist Soldier, editor of The Best of Francis Ledwidge and Francis Ledwidge The Complete Poems and co-founder of the Inchicore Ledwidge Society will speak about Ledwidge’s connection­s with Dublin.

He will also launch Susan Connolly’s poems. This event is supported by the Arts Offices of Meath and Create Louth, The Francis Ledwidge 100, The Francis Ledwidge Museum and The Droichead Arts Centre.

The event starts at 8pm and tickets are €12/10 from the centre.
