Mary and Mona celebrate retirement from Dunnes
FRIENDS and colleagues gathered in The Mariner recently to celebrate the retirement of their longstanding colleagues in Dunnes, Mary Kelly and Mona Murphy.
The two women, who between them have spent almost 40 years working with the company, were given a fantastic send off as they retired within two weeks of each other.
Both were well known faces behind the tills in Dunnes on West Street and will be sorely missed by all their loyal customers as well as their many friends and colleagues in Dunnes.
Mona, from Moneymore, has worked in Dunnes for 18 years while Mary, who lives in the Haymarket, has been behind the til for the past 17 years.
‘It was a brilliant party and the staff were fantastic, they were such a good crowd and so generous to us both,’ Mary told the Drogheda Independent.
‘We all had a great night together and we had a great send off. They really looked after myself and Mona and gave us a really generous gift.
‘ They were all there to help us celebrate, they gave us a great night. It was really well organised, a lovely send off,’ said Mary.
There was a huge crowd in the Mariner to help the two ladies mark the occasion and the party continued into the small hours.
Mary said she has really enjoyed her 17 years with Dunnes and would have stayed on if she could, admitting she will really miss her colleagues.
Mary said she is planning to go on a nice holiday and has two lovely grandchildren who will no doubt keep her busy during her retirement.
THE night was enjoyed by all although Mary admits it was bittersweet for herself and Mona as they will both miss their customers and their friends and colleagues. ‘A lot of the customers would be the same age as us, they get the town bus in and they always to to West Street to do the shopping. We would have got to know them over the years.’
