THE Dromiskin 5k took place around the roads of the village last Saturday and it drew a massive turnout of runners of all abilities in an electric atmosphere.

A breakway group of three athletes set a brisk pace and stayed together for 3k, but then Kenya’s Freddie Keron Sittuk moved up another gear to pull away for victory and in doing so set a new course record of 15:02. Sittuk was followed by two former Olympians, led by Valdas Dopolskas - in a time of 15:24 - who represented his native Latvia in the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016 in the marathon and now runs with Balbriggan AC.

In third place was former Irish Olympian Shane Healy in a time of 15:51. He represented Ireland in the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 in the 1500m.

The women’s race was also a keenly contested affair and the evergreen Rose Lambe, who runs for Carrick Aces, led the women home
