Last chance to sample a hair-raising night at the Highlanes Gallery

AFTER a very busy summer with people travelling across the island to see Bristle: Hair and Hegemony, it comes to an end, but not before Highlanes Gallery presents a hirsute evening of demonstrat­ions, music and a lecture.

Culture Night, on Friday 22nd September, will be marked with a free late evening access until 9pm, to the exhibition, which has received critical acclaim and has been very popular, as well as a demonstrat­ion by Jennifer Twum in the Upper Gallery on ethnic hairstyles, while ensconced in the café will be traditiona­l musicians, Brendan McCreanor and SJ McArdle.

At 7.30pm, Irish – Ethiopian and now London-based academic, broadcaste­r and writer, Emma Dabiri, presents an illustrate­d lecture titled From Ephemeral to Infinity: Hair in the African context.

It will be a great night for all the family, wander, look, listen, and discuss, and Highlanes Café Relish is also serving culturally rich supper, and are taking bookings on 041-9803311. The Orchard Keeper (Shearsman Books UK, 2017). The Hills are Crying is a new song cycle by the composer Michael Holohan and includes settings of poems by Francis Ledwidge. Featuring the soprano from Drogheda Hannah O’Brien, Rebecca Draisey- Collishaw oboe/cor anglais and Michael Holohan piano.

Miriam O’Gara- Kilmurry author of Éire’s WW1 War Poet: F.E. Ledwidge will speak about Ledwidge and Drogheda with reference to The Drogheda Independen­t newspaper.

A rare archival film on the life and work of Francis Ledwidge will also be shown.

After the interval Liam O’Meara, poet, author of Francis Ledwidge: Poet Activist Soldier, editor of The Best of Francis Ledwidge and Francis Ledwidge The Complete Poems and co-founder of the Inchicore Ledwidge Society will speak about Ledwidge’s connection­s with Dublin.

Rachel O’ Malley, Mary Clarke (singers) and Eugene Kavanagh guitar will also feature in the programme.

This event is supported by the Arts Offices of Meath and Create Louth, The Francis Ledwidge 100, The Francis Ledwidge Museum and The Droichead Arts Centre.

The event starts at 8pm and tickets are €12/10 from the centre. reign supreme! The event will begin at 7pm and the cost is €50 per table of four.

The event will be hosted by a celebrity compere and attended by several Internatio­nal sports stars.
