Kil-Hill combo shock Saints in
KIL’LEY/D’SHILL ST FECHINS 3-6 0-11
KILKERLEY/DOWDALLSHILL defied the odds when they beat a strongly fancied St Fechins in an exciting Intermediate decider in Tallanstown on Sunday, reports Dermot Woods.
The Fechins started the better and took the lead after just three minutes when Rachel Kinch converted a free.
They also had further chances hitting two wides and saw a Liz Sheridan effort hit the woodwork before the north Louth outfit drew level in their first meaningful attack as Emily Norton pointed following a surging run in the seventh minute.
Fechins were again unlucky as a brilliant pass by Catherine McGlew found Kinch in space who then smacked a wonderful shot off the crossbar.
The combination outfit took advantage of this reprieve when a Emma Singleton high cross sailed high into the Fechin’s net catching the keeper off her goal line to lead for the first-time 1-1 to 0-1 midway through the half.
Fechins responded well to this setback with points from midfielders Rachel Kinch and Hayley McDonell from frees.
Fechins then thought they were back in front when a high ball from Kinch dropped in the small square where it was met by Shaylene McDonagh who knocked the ball to the net from close range but after consulting with his umpires Referee Liam O’Neill disallowed the score due to a square ball infringement.
Carrie Keenan and Hazel Haughney then swapped points before the Fechin’s were dealt another major blow
