STAMULLEN RESIDENTS BID TO LAND PLAYGROUND

- By HUBERT MURPHY

EFFORTS are to be renewed to secure a playground for the village of Stamullen.

A group of parents based in the area formed a committee in 2015 with the aim of bringing a playground to the village. Stamullen village has a large population of children and there is no facility for them to play – something they want to change .

As it currently stands, parents in Stamullen need to drive to Laytown, Bettystown or Ardgillan Castle in order for their children to access a playground, a crazy situation given the young population in the village.

‘Over the past two years we have met with all local public representatives, and have firmly put a playground for the village back on the agenda.

‘Meath County Council have committed a significant sum to the building of one, however we are lacking one detail, there is currently little or no available council land in the village to build on,’ the committee state.

They have also made submissions to the Draft Meath county Development plan.

Discussions with the developers of Gormanston Park regarding the provision of publically accessible amenities within the new complex have also taken place as well as working with the East Meath Revival groups to share experiences and working towards highlighting the needs of the area with Meath County Council.

They are asking local landowners to come forward if they are interested in helping the cause.

‘We would be willing to discuss any details around a donation or purchasing of land in order to facilitate the building of the playground.

‘We would ask landowners to contact us via email stamullenplayground@gmail.com or via our Facebook page - Stamullen Needs a Playground,’ they add.

As part of looking to the future for the expanding area, there are ongoing discussions with McGarrell Reilly Homes on future developments in Stamullen and the provision of greenspace.

Committee members are Fiona Coyle, Robert Purfield, Ciaran Flanagan and Sarah Vanden Broeck.
