Herrings are big business in Clogher
In the past six weeks , tons of herrings have been landed at Clogherhead pier, earning the country almost £300,000 in exports and ensuring the revival of the Co. Louth port as one of the major foreign currency earners in the fishing industry.
Not bad for a harbour with a rickety old pier that seemingly is not even worth a Government grant. In fact, had there been sufficient ingenuity to provide a processing plant close by, Clogherhead could have doubled those export earnings and at the same time provide much needed employment locally.
