50 YEARS OF WEDDED BLISS FOR LOCAL COUPLE
Local couple Michael and Betty McKeown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently with a party in O’Raighallaighs clubhouse.
The couple were joined by their extended family for the happy event and the GAA club proved the perfect venue for the celebrations, given Michael’s long association with both the local club and the Louth team.
Michael is originally from Boyle O’Reilly and Betty is from Carmelite Cottages and the couple met in The Abbey Ballroom.
They married in St Mary’s Church on the Dublin Road on September 21st, 1967 and set up home in the newly built Weir Hope estate where they went on to have four children; Donal, Helen, Tony and Eamonn.
Although born and bred in Drogheda, the couple moved to Cork in 1981 but have continued their strong links with the area and return home regularly to visit family and friends.
Indeed, eldest son Donal returned to the area last year when he and his wife bought a house in Termonfeckin.
‘ The party went really well and the venue was ideal,’ Michael told the Drogheda Independent. ‘We had lots of family there so all our own family as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
‘It was a very enjoyable night, the whole place was decorated and looked very well. We’ve been down in Cork for over 35 years but we come back up to Drogheda on a pretty regular basis to see family and attend events so we still come home a lot,’ said Michael.
Michael is well known locally through his GAA connections, having played for both the O’Raghallaigh’s and the Louth team.
He played with the Louth Minor team in 1959, 1960 and 1961 and went on to play with the Senior team, taking part in his last game in 1979.
