SLANE DRAW RESULTS

Slane GFC held their Building Fund Draw in the Black & White Thatched Inn last Saturday evening and local lady Aoibhe Harding scooped the first prize of €4,000 or a Honda quad. Other prize winners were - 2nd: €2,500 Donal Finnegan; 3rd: €1,000 John O’Donoghue; 4th: €500 Angela Callaghan; 5th: €500 Grainne Whyte; 6th: Samsung 4K UHD TV Hugh O’Donnell; 7th: Samsung Galaxy Tablet M Smithers; 8th: Samsung Galaxy Tablet Mary Clarke; 9th: Beko Microwave Brian O’Neill; 10th: Beko Microwave Lucy O’Gorman; 11th: €100 Smyths Pharmacy voucher Jim Mullery.

LEDWIDGE EVENING

An evening celebratin­g the centenary of Francis Ledwidge takes place this Saturday, September 23rd, at 8pm in the Droichead Arts Centre, Stockwell St, Drogheda. It will be an evening of poetry, music, film and history featuring composer Michael Holohan, poet Susan Connolly and guests. There will be poetry reading by Susan Connolly and the Drogheda launch of her new sequence of poems about Francis Ledwidge, The Orchard Keeper. The title of the sequence refers to the McGoona family’s orchard at Donaghmore, Navan, where Francis Ledwidge spent many a happy day with his close friend Matty McGoona violinist and naturalist.

The Hills are Crying is a new song cycle by the composer Michael Holohan and includes settings of poems by Francis Ledwidge. Tickets are €12 and €10.

SLANE DISTILLERY

Slane Distillery, located on the grounds of Slane Castle, is now open to the public for tours. Adults €18, six to 17 year olds €11. All tours 20% discount during the month of September. SLANE CASTLE RUN St Patrick’s national school parents associatio­n have a 5K Slane Castle trail run/walk this Sunday, September 24th at 9.30am. Over 300 participat­ed last year and this years event will help fund the building of a new outdoor shelter for the children of the school. Fun for all the family, new scenic route. 3 COUNTY CYCLE

Navan Road Club members were delighted with the reception they received during their 3 County Cycle which raised over €2,500 for the ARC Cancer Support Centre. The spin was started in Slane by the chairperso­n of the Francis Ledwidge Museum Committee Rosemary Yore. The group took in the areas around Lobinstown, Drumconrat­h, Tallanstow­n, Ardee and Woodtown, with the finish back in Slane. Along the way Margaret Hannigan placed a wreath at the spot just outside Drumconrat­h where their good friend and cycling colleague Paul Healion tragically lost his life in a road accident a few years ago. At Donoghues Bar in Woodtown a number of presentati­ons took place including one to Maria O Connell for her great hospitalit­y and her great support for the ARC Centre.

That great cycling fundraiser Benny Grogan also received a special presentati­on. Club member Larry Clarke thanked all who took part and contribute­d to the cycle in any way, also thanking the Village Inn in Slane, Louth Arms in Tallanstow­n, Donoghues Bar and Slane Red Cross. Thanks also to Noel Clarke, Greg Johnson and Tommy Fleming who drove the support vehicles.

LEDWIDGE CENTENARY SEMINAR

Meath County Council and the Francis Ledwidge Museum Committee, in collaborat­ion with Gerald Dawe (Trinity College Dublin), are organising a one-day seminar to mark the centenary of the death of Francis Ledwidge in Slane Castle on Saturday 14th October 2017. Contributo­rs include Myles Dungan, Gerard Dawe, Lucy Collins, Fran Brearton and Frank Ledwidge. The book ‘ A Bittern Cry’ will also be launched at the seminar which starts at 9.45am and concludes at 4pm.

CREATIVE WRITING

Creative writing classes in Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan, commence on Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, 28th, from 10.30am till 12.30pm. These courses which are suitable for beginners or improvers explore a range of topics, from character and plot developmen­t to voice and style. Through writing exercises and examples from literature, participan­ts will develop an awareness of various literary tools and techniques. NIGHT AT THE DOGS

Slane Wanderers soccer club are holding a Night at the Dogs in Dundalk on Saturday, October 14. Tickets €20 includes admission race card, reserved area with finger food and of course live greyhound racing. Tickets available from committee members. Devenish will host the 2017 Point-to-Point & Country Fair at Dowth, in conjunctio­n with the Meath Hunt and Tara Harriers on Sunday, October 29th. Great racing, country fair exhibits, artisan food, free family fun, shopping village.

Set Dancing has resumed in Sandpit Hall on Thursday nights at 8.30pm. It has a great following in the locality and is considered a great way to keep fit over the Winter months. With the Fleadh taking place in Drogheda next year, there is no better time than now to prepare by learning the Steps. All are welcome.

A hugely successful Coffee Morning was held last Thursday in the home of Paud and Phil Leech, Beltichbou­rne. Both Paud and Phil would like to thank all who attended, those who gave donations and contribute­d spot prizes to the raffle. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped out on the day. Ireland’s biggest Coffee Morning this year was sponsored by Bewleys and all funds raised go to local area Hospice Homecare.

Congratula­tions to the Louth Senior Team who were Runnersin the National Inter County competitio­n held in Ryston recently. They preformed excellentl­y and were only piped at the post by the Cork Team. The final of the Club Mixed Doubles competitio­n between Molly Penders and Pat Greene and Christine Carroll and Frank Pendersmto­ok place last Tuesday September 12th. The final of the Club Doubles between Gerry Breen Snr. and Gerry Breen Jnr. and Johnny Campbell Snr. and Colin Campbell will take place shortly. Congratula­tions to Ann Ward on finishing as Runner-Up in the Louth Down Monaghan Matchplay in Cloghogue recently. The Club Captains Ann Ward and Barry McQuillan held their “Captains Prize” competitio­n last Sunday which was preceded by breakfast and was very much enjoyed by all. The “Seapoint’s Masters” sponsored by David Carroll, Seapoint Golf Club, will take place on Sunday September 24th . The Entry Sheet is on the notice board. Mixed and Non Mixed entries are accepted. The numbers drawn were 4, 12, 13 and 15. There was no jackpot winner. The €100 winner was Michael Mc Evoy. Winners of €20 were Maurice Rafferty, Tommy Duff, P. Van Strien, James Duff and Sean Mc Connell. The jackpot this week is worth €7,000.

TERMONFECK­IN CELTIC

It is good to see that work is progressin­g on the constructi­on of a new entrance to the Termonfeck­in Celtic football field. The existing entrance has been causing concern it is extremely blind when trying to exit and there have been some close calls on Sheetland Road where the field is. Hopefully this will alleviate all such problems and make it much safer.
