Kelly’s heroes in big Carrick cycle

- By HUBERT MURPHY

THE memory of a great man drove 18 hardy souls from the banks of the Shannon to the green, grassly slopes of the Boyne recently in a marathon charity cycle.

The group set off from Carrick-on-Shannon for Drogheda to honour great local athlete, the late Enda Collins (pictured) and to raise funds for the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre.

The group raised thousands as a result of the venture, taking off at 9am in Carrick and arriving in Drogheda in the late afternoon to a wonderful reception.

The distance was 145km and they had 90km in perfect cycling weather followed by 55km in some very heavy, cold rain. With just two punctures on route among the group all went very well.

‘ Thank you to all the cyclists who took part and to the volunteers who supported them all the way. We raised some funds for a very worthy cause. Enda would be proud,’ a spokesperson stated.’

Last year a whopping €50,000 was raised for the GK Centre in Drogheda from the event.
