Sculpture would be real talking point on Boyne Canal
A sculpture should be commissioned and erected along the Boyne Canal to give recognition to this historic stretch of waterway, according to Cllr Frank Godfrey.
‘Now that Oldbridge House and estate is open, the time is right for a sculpture,’ said Cllr Godfrey.
‘It could be done in stone or bronze along the water’s edge and would add to the attraction of the Boyne Valley.’
He says many aspects of the history and foklore surrounding the Boyne could be used in the depiction.
‘ The sculpture could feature a horse pulling a barge along, or just a man working on the canal, or even the famed Salmon of Knowledge, caught in this vicinity and cooked by the legendary Finn Mac Cumhail.’
Saying that it’s time that the canal got more recognition, Cllr Godfrey, who lives just a stone’s throw from the waterway, hopes that Meath County Council and Meath Leader will get behind the initiative.
‘ The canal is breathtakingly beautiful and scenic. There’s a lot of work going on, with volunteers cleaning and replacing lock gates over the years, and I’m proud to have been a part of the restoration work.
‘ The Boyne Canal is part of our heritage and there is no sculpture on this waterway. In fact, there’s not enough emphasis on it at all – it’s time to mark this important transport canal with a sculpture,’ he added.
