How to upset a linesman

EVEN linesmen in the League of Ireland have feelings you know!

I was at Oriel for the Dundalk-Drogheda clash on Friday, standing just behind the United goal in the first half.

A long ball came in, with a hint of offside against the Dundalk player. I, and others, exclaimed ‘offside!’ and the player ran on, but crossed badly - no danger.

However, the shout out upset the linesman who was now just a few yards away, and he commenced a short, stinging rebuke, which ended with ‘it wasn’t offside and how could you see anyway, standing behind the goal! I think the subs warming up behind him even got a surprise - and he wasn’t joking!

That’s that - have to be kinder to linesmen from now on then!
